Smoothed analysis of the successive shortest path algorithm

چکیده
The minimum-cost flow problem is a classic problem in combinatorial optimization with various applications. Several pseudo-polynomial, polynomial, and strongly polynomial algorithms have been developed in the past decades, and it seems that both the problem and the algorithms are well understood. However, some of the algorithms’ running times observed in empirical studies contrast the running times obtained by worst-case analysis not only in the order of magnitude but also in the ranking when compared to each other. For example, the Successive Shortest Path (SSP) algorithm, which has an exponential worst-case running time, seems to outperform the strongly polynomial Minimum-Mean Cycle Canceling algorithm. To explain this discrepancy, we study the SSP algorithm in the framework of smoothed analysis and establish a bound of O(mnφ) for the number of iterations, which implies a smoothed running time of O(mnφ(m+n logn)), where n andm denote the number of nodes and edges, respectively, and φ is a measure for the amount of random noise. This shows that worst-case instances for the SSP algorithm are not robust and unlikely to be encountered in practice. Furthermore, we prove a smoothed lower bound of Ω(m ·min {n, φ} ·φ) for the number of iterations of the SSP algorithm, showing that the upper bound cannot be improved for φ = Ω(n).

Smoothed Analysis of Selected Optimization Problems and Algorithms
Optimization problems arise in almost every field of economics, engineering, and science. Many of these problems are well-understood in theory and sophisticated algorithms exist to solve them efficiently in practice. Unfortunately, in many cases the theoretically most efficient algorithms perform poorly in practice. On the other hand, some algorithms are much faster than theory predicts. This d...
متن کاملAll Pairs Shortest Paths: Randomization and Replacement
We present a survey of results in the field of graph algorithms. We begin with an All Pairs Shortest Path algorithm with some constraints that runs in O(n) by Peres. We continue with a Replacement Paths algorithm by Williams and conclude with a smoothed analysis of a Single Source Shortest Paths algorithm by Banderier. Each of these problems has connections to randomization in graph algorithms.
متن کاملA New Algorithm for the Discrete Shortest Path Problem in a Network Based on Ideal Fuzzy Sets
A shortest path problem is a practical issue in networks for real-world situations. This paper addresses the fuzzy shortest path (FSP) problem to obtain the best fuzzy path among fuzzy paths sets. For this purpose, a new efficient algorithm is introduced based on a new definition of ideal fuzzy sets (IFSs) in order to determine the fuzzy shortest path. Moreover, this algorithm is developed for ...

Shortest path problem is among the most interesting problems in the field of graph and network theory. There are many efficient matrix based algorithms for detecting of shortest path and distance between all pairs of this problem in literature. In this paper, a new exact algorithm, named Cascade Rectangle Algorithm, is presented by using main structure of previous exact algorithms and developin...
متن کاملFinding the nearest facility for travel and waiting time in a transport network
One of user's queries from navigation service is to find the nearest facility in terms of time. The facility that is being questioned by the user as a destination may have a queuing service system (e.g. bank), which means that the cost function of the shortest path includes the waiting time at the destination as well as the travel time. This research conducts in the zone 1 of Mashhad with Bank ...
